Do You Need Antibiotics Before Dental Treatment?

imageIf you have a history of heart problems or have had a joint replacement, you may need to be premedicated with antibiotics before dental procedures.  It is recommended that you check with your family physician or surgeon to confirm if this is necessary.

The American Heart Association has recently updated the Guidelines for Premedication and can be viewed at:

Have you heard of cilantro extract? My naturopath recommended using this to limit absorption of mercury when getting cleanings and dental procedures. Why are dentists still using that kind of filling anyway?

There are some studies that show that Chinese Parsley, or cilantro oil can be used in chelating heavy metals. Once such study describes the presence of mercury in the body after amalgam fillings were removed from the teeth and replaced with a synthetic material....evidently, cilantro oil was used to chelate and detoxify mercury from the patient's body. You can read the study here: (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=8914687)

Many dental offices are no longer using amalgam as the restorative material of choice. Composite(synthetic plastic) substances, gold and porcelain materials have improved in dental applications and are fast replacing the need for amalgam. Check with your dentist to learn about their current standard of practice.
